Dental Tips Series #22: Healthy Habits for Your Little Ones

Good oral health doesn’t start when your child gets their first cavity — it starts long before they ever sit in the dental chair. In this week’s Dental Tip, one of our team members is joined by Astro, our North Creek Dental Care pediatric mascot, to share some of the most important things parents can do to protect their children’s teeth from the very beginning.

Start Before the First Tooth

You might be surprised to learn that dental care begins before your baby even has teeth. One of the biggest things to avoid: putting your child to bed with a bottle of milk, juice, or any sugary drink. When sweet fluids pool in a sleeping baby’s mouth overnight, they can cause serious decay — and that damage doesn’t just affect baby teeth. It can impact the development of adult teeth underneath, too.

The rule is simple: if your baby needs a bottle at bedtime, make it water.

Bring Your Child In Around Age One

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit around your child’s first birthday — and we wholeheartedly agree. Coming in early isn’t just about checking for problems. It’s about building a positive relationship with dental care before any anxiety can set in, and giving parents personalized guidance on what to watch for as their child grows.

We love welcoming little ones into our practice. The earlier they start, the more comfortable they become.

Watch the Sugar Intake

A relatively low-sugar diet plays a huge role in childhood oral health. That doesn’t mean sweets are off the table forever — but being mindful of how often and how much sugar your kids are consuming can make a real difference in preventing cavities down the road.

Build the Habits Early

The best gift you can give your child’s smile is consistency. Brushing and flossing twice a day might feel like a battle some nights, but the habits formed in childhood tend to stick for life. Start early, make it fun, and stick with it — your future self (and their future dentist) will thank you.
